DAVIS, Calif. — After helping shape the program nearly three decades ago, Jamey Wright is once again standing poolside. The UC Davis veteran has been named head coach for the Davis Senior High School women's water polo team.

“The girl's water polo program always sets the bar high," Wright said, feeling optimistic about the upcoming season. "We set it high when we first started, and every year it gets higher. But you know, I don’t think we ever shy away from it."

Wright has a storied history in the Davis water polo community, having coached at the club, high school, collegiate, and international levels. He led the UC Davis women's program to success from 1983 to 2022 in addition to coaching various local teams and national squads.

Wright also helped charter the Davis High School women's team in the mid-90s when there was previously only a men's side. Over the last two seasons, he has served as a DHS women's team assistant coach, while enjoying a deserved—if busy—retirement.

"Jamey Wright is a familiar and respected coach in Davis, as well as in the collegiate and international women's water polo communities," Athletic Director Mark McGreevy said. "It would be hard to imagine bringing in anyone with more experience and expertise in the sport than Jamey. Most importantly, Coach Wright combines that experience and expertise with a deep understanding and support of the purpose of education-based sport. He is deeply committed to the human growth and development of the athletes under his charge. For these reasons, we are excited and grateful that he will be assuming leadership of one of our most storied Blue Devil programs."

While the team had many seniors graduate last season, Wright says he doesn't fear a "rebuilding year." In fact, he looks forward to seeing how this year's upcoming talent learns how to work together.

“It’s a bit like performance art when you’re creating a team," he explains, saying he enjoys finding new combinations of players. "One girl has to fit here, another there, and how do they mesh? It’s so interesting, seeing how it all shakes out.”

And as for setting goals in this new season as head coach? Wright has never been afraid of dreaming big.
