For the second straight year, the Davis High Softball team would play Mountain House in the opening round of the D1 Section Playoffs. There was less drama this year, but Wednesday's result was the same: a Blue Devil win.
Behind a three-hit day from Gracie Martinez and dominant pitching, it was an easy 10-0 win for the host Blue Devils.
Martinez sparked the Blue Devils' offense from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Blue Devils wasted little time taking control. Sofia Lester doubled in the first inning to bring home the game’s opening run, giving Davis an early lead it would never surrender.
Davis added to the advantage in the third inning when Lily Lingbloom delivered a sacrifice fly, and Madison Hunter ripped an RBI double down the left field line.
The Blue Devils broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs. Isa Chavez-Berman singled in a run, and Martinez doubled home another. Hunter, Lester, and Molly Roseen each drove in runs during the inning as well.
In the circle, Kayt Lebar-Triepke dominated over five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine without issuing a walk. Layla Duarte closed out the game with a scoreless inning in relief.
Davis finished with 10 hits overall. Roseen led the team with three RBIs, while Chavez-Berman added two hits. The Blue Devils also showed patience at the plate with six walks and stayed aggressive on the bases with four stolen bases.
Davis will host former Delta League rival Franklin of Elk Grove on Friday.
Note: Last season’s drama against Mountain House included Bella Trask hitting two home runs, including the game-winner, a two-run shot in the last inning, to give the Devils the 7-6 come-from-behind win. She did so with a torn ACL, which was later diagnosed and operated on, causing her to miss this season.
