After three weeks off, the Davis High Varsity Softball team was back in action this past weekend. The Blues Devils traveled to Tracy to compete in the Nor Cal Classic Tournament.
Friday Davis beat Orestemba High 9-0 and Patterson 10-9. The top of the order did the majority of the damage for the Devils' offense. Leadoff hitter, Gracie Martinez, was 6 for 7 and scored five runs. Second-place hitter, Lily Lingbloom, was 5 for 7 with an inside-the-park homerun.
Layla Duarte was strong in the circle. She pitched seven innings, allowing no earned runs, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Saturday morning, Davis defeated Kimball High in the semi-final game 6-1 in nine innings. Duarte would be dominant again, only allowing one run in nine innings of work. The game was tied 1-1 until Davis broke it open in the ninth inning. A sacrifice fly by Duarte and doubles from Addie Sinclair, and Lingbloom would seal the deal for the Devils.
In the Championship game, Davis would face long-time rival St. Francis. Things looked as bleak as the stormy sky for Davis, trailing 6-2 heading to the last inning. Davis would rally, scoring four runs to tie the game 6-6, highlighted by singles from Kylie Yao and Sofia Lester and a triple from Lingbloom.
Heading to extra innings for a second straight game, Davis would get a game-winning single from Sinclair in the bottom of the eighth to secure the Championship. Pitcher Kayt LeBar-Triepke would go the distance, only allowing a single run in the final six innings.
