With warm spring weather, Wildhorse Golf Course’s driving range was packed on Wednesday afternoon.

That is when the The Davis High School boys golf squad warmed up for a match against Oak Ridge High's team. Then the Blue Devils went on to post a 189-200 win in a Sierra Foothill League match

On the back nine at Wildhorse, Dylan Johnson shot a two-under 34 and was the low individual for DHS. Close behind, Dustin Mills posted an impressive 35. The rest of the scoring included Luke Nguyen (37), Aaron Yamamoto (40), Bannon Abrams (43) and Mason Snethen (44).

Davis head coach Kyle Kordana, who is in his second season, has his team off to a strong start.

"The season has been great," said Kordana, whose team is 4-3 in SFL.

This season, the Blue Devils placed third at the Rocklin Invitational (403 at Whitney Oaks), a tough course, led by Bannon Abrams' 78. They also took sixth place out of 18 teams in the Father Barry Tournament, a 390 at the Mackenzie Course at Haggin Oaks, and 12 shots behind Granite Bay. Johnson shot a 69 to win low individual, while Josh Lin played great with a 75.

Davis benefits from senior leadership by four-year varsity players Johnson and Yamamoto. Sophomore transfer Nguyen adds a strong game, joined by fellow sophomores Lin, Abrams and Mills.

"We are a young varsity with lots of upside and time to develop," Kordana said. "(The) seniors have been solid, and sophomores have posted strong scores."

With this group’s blend of experience and youth, Kordana added, "We are looking forward to the remainder of the season and the future with this squad."

Johnson anchors the No. 1 spot.

Asked about the team and his game, he said, "The first month went well — we started 3-0. We had an early injury, but bounced back. I feel good about my swing and ball-striking right now, but I am working on my putting and my line-hitting. This summer, I'll enter more tournaments and work on my game. I’m still deciding on college plans for next year." Click here to read full article
