With state championships on the horizon for the DHS ski team, many athletes are focused on making the cut.
The race on Monday, Feb. 16 was important for racers hoping to qualify in the Giant Slalom discipline because it was a 2-in-1, with athletes making up for a missed race as well as skiing the scheduled one.
Despite the importance of this race, the weather decided it was time for a storm.
The team practices at Sugar Bowl resort in Tahoe on Saturdays, and races at various different resorts on Mondays throughout the season.
Practice happened as usual on Saturday, Feb. 14, but the second big storm of the year began to roll in on Sunday, Feb. 15.
This storm is both an ongoing issue and relief for the team. Snowstorms have been scarce this year, so any snow is good snow.
However, with this big storm, five to eight feet of snow makes setting the gates for a racecourse virtually impossible.
Cancellations are always an issue, but with State Championships looming over the heads of the racers aiming to qualify, this is an even bigger dilemma.
The last race of the regular season is Monday, Feb. 23, and DHS coaches are hoping to find a way to have racers compete in several different makeup races on one day.
The weather is a big obstacle for teams like this one, but all teams have to battle against it.
Racers and coaches alike are hoping for a break in the storm to squeeze in some make-up races, but only time will tell.
