Kriztian Anderson and Eli Mas got the ball rolling — pardon the pun — for the Davis High School boys soccer team in Monday’s Sierra Foothill League finale against rival Jesuit High’s squad.

Then two more Blue Devils added during the process as well. Coming into the game a little hungrier after a tough league road game also contributed toward the cause.

After 80 minutes, DHS posted a 4-1 win over the Marauders on Senior Night at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium to claim their second consecutive SFL title.

“I thought we were pretty solid defensively,” said Anderson, a midfielder and one of the Blue Devil team captains. “The wind was really strong tonight. We just stayed organized in the back (for the long ball), dealing with the 50/50 balls. I thought that was huge.”

Davis (10-1-3 in the SFL, 10-4-3 overall) now plays the short waiting game in terms of its seeding in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Boys Soccer Playoffs — Division I. More information about the playoffs for both the Blue Devil boys and girls soccer programs is toward the end of this story.

Anderson scored the first goal in the first half of Monday’s contest to make it 1-0.

Then Mas wasted no time increasing the Blue Devils’ lead to 2-0, slotting the ball into the back of the net. The score would remain the same until halftime.

Both teams traded possessions of the ball on the other side of the field in the second half. Both would find opportunities to land the ball into the net for the combined three goals in the final 40 minutes.

In the 74th minute, Jesuit (5-6-3 in the SFL, 9-8-3 overall) scored its only goal at the south end of the stadium, coming off a pass.

Davis added the extra icing on the league-title cake in the final six minutes of the game as Blue Devil defender Javier Velasquez, a junior, found a loose ball in front of the box and lined the shot into the net for a 3-1 score.

The final goal came in the final minute. Another midfielder in Zachary Schroeder, on a breakaway at midfield, fired the ball on the ground into the net.

The Blue Devils came in a little hungrier in wanting to beat Jesuit. That is because DHS and Rocklin ended their league game with a 1-1 tie at the Thunder’s field on Feb. 5.

“I think after that tie at Rocklin, we knew we had to come out Senior Night (ready to play),” Anderson said.

Winning back-to-back SFL titles is very gratifying for DHS head coach Alex Park, Anderson and the Blue Devils, who have only given up eight goals this winter season.

“An amazing backline,” said Park, who was also pleased with the backline in getting a goal from Velasquez. “I thought the boys came out and played well.”

Anderson added, “It feels amazing. It’s good for the high school, I think, and for this program.”

Before the game, DHS recognized its seniors on the team in their final regular season home game of the season – sans the start of the D-I playoffs in which the team would host, at least, one playoff game.

Those seniors include goalkeeper Christian Ortega, midfielder/defender Arieh Rooks, defender Noah Ringo, forward Subhan Rahmi, midfielder Chris Marquez, Anderson, forward Joshua Emojong, Schroeder, midfielder Andres Gomez-Esparta and defender Otis Prins.
