Madison Lujan had her share of shots on goal for the Davis High girls soccer team in Tuesday’s Sierra Foothill League game.

Opening the second half of league action against Folsom, Lujan, a four-year starter at the striker position, struck at the right time for the Blue Devils., leading to a 1-0 DHS win over the Bulldogs for the season sweep at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium.

Davis opened the season against Folsom at Bulldog Stadium on Dec. 11, posting a 2-1 victory.

Tuesday’s win was the first in almost two weeks for the Blue Devils. After beating Oak Ridge 4-3, also at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium, on Jan. 8, DHS lost to Rocklin 1-0 on Jan. 13 and tied rival St. Francis 1-1 on Jan. 15.

Davis (3-1-3 in the SFL) and Folsom (1-5-3 in the SFL) were scoreless until the 75th minute of the contest. That is when Lujan, at the north end of the stadium, booted the ball from the left side of the field, a line-drive shot. The ball landed into the right corner of the net and away from the Folsom goalie for the lone goal of the game.

“We just wanted to take shots on goal,” Lujan said. “Just keep taking chances.”

Added DHS head coach Sara Stone, “She’s developed into a player that is willing to shoot a goal from her left and right. She gets herself in a lot of positive situations because of that. It couldn’t have been more perfectly placed. I’m glad we were able to capitalize on that.”

Blue Devil midfielder Maya Davis, a junior, almost snuck a second goal into the net with less than a minute left in the game, from the left side of the field. But the shot that missed.

“The timing of (Lujan’s) goal, I kind of felt if we got one goal, it would kind of open up the game,” Stone said. “They (Folsom) had so many players behind the ball.”

Lujan had another shot in front of goal in the 52nd minute of the game, 10 yards directly in front of the Bulldogs’ box, but the ball rolled to the left side of the net and out of bounds.

Blue Devil midfielder Linh Ramirez, a junior, had a shot at the net three minutes earlier. Kicking from the side of the field on the right side, Ramirez watched her effort land on top of the net.

Lujan and the Blue Devils’ front line kept the ball on the north end of the stadium for most of the second half. Aiding in passing the ball from the middle of the field to the flanks were fellow strikers Chloe Ehlers and Jordan Meade, and midfielders Izzy Churchward, Sam Rodriguez and Ramirez.

The Blue Devils’ backline defenders Hope Heringer and Isabella Hazel maintained the middle, helping keep the Bulldogs’ offense silent in trying to create any offense flow to set up a potential shot on goal.

“I think we all fought pretty hard,” Lujan said. “It was a team effort.”

The win keeps DHS in fourth place in the SFL. Whitney, Del Oro and Rocklin occupy third through first place respectively.
