The 52nd annual Dorothy Speck Tournament kicked off on Thursday, Dec. 4, with the Davis High varsity womens' team starting off with a matchup against Woodcreek.

The game started off strong for Davis, and they ended the first quarter up by 11 points. Despite sophomore Lorelei Nachman’s thrilling 14 point first quarter, Woodcreek managed to crawl back into the game.

At halftime, the Blue Devils only led by six points. Woodcreek’s Amaya Grant led the way for the Timberwolves, displaying consistent performances throughout each quarter.

Woodcreek cut the lead again during the third quarter, and by the end of it they only trailed Davis by two points.

Although Woodcreek fought their way back into the game, Davis played hard throughout, and their determination prevailed in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils went on a run at the end of the fourth quarter to seal the game. Woodcreek’s attempts to cut Davis’ lead were not enough, and the Blue Devils advanced with a final score of 58-49.

Nachman ended the game with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior Sonia Clayton followed with 10 points, 9 steals, and 50% shooting from the field.

On Friday, Dec. 5, the Blue Devils tipped off against Lincoln (Stockton). This game proved to be no easier than the previous night.

The first half was tight, and Davis only trailed by one at the end of it. Nachman and Clayton once again led the way for Davis offensively.

For Lincoln, sophomores Terrazia Smith and Lilly Mingran were finding their way around the Davis defense, and getting to the basket to score.

The second half was just as grueling as the first. Nachman’s offensive performance kept Davis in the game, as they struggled to stop the quick Lincoln players from getting to the basket.

With the clock sitting at just over five seconds, Lincoln sank two free throws, extending their lead to three. Lorelei Nachman weaved around defenders to get the ball and push it up the court. Her contested attempt to tie the game fell short.

The Blue Devils lost with a final score of 72-69. Still, Nachman notched 36 points, shooting 52% from the field and 58% from three. Clayton secured a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, instead of playing in the third place game against Folsom, Davis switched with Woodcreek to play Ponderosa in the consolation championship game.

This game proved to be their easiest matchup of the tournament, as the Blue Devils won with a final score of 64-48.

Ponderosa’s Rowan Thomas led her squad with a total of 19 points.

For Davis, Nachman showed out once again with 31 points on 53% shooting from the field and 55% from three. The outstanding sophomore finished the tournament averaging just over 30 points per game.

Senior Riley MacDonald also displayed an impressive performance inside, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds—a double double. This was on 63% shooting from the field.

The Blue Devils ended the tournament 2-1, with Nachman and Clayton earning all tournament honors.

The team now looks forward to another home game on Tuesday, Dec. 9 against Inderkum, before hitting the road for their first time this season.
