It was a Senior Night victory for the Davis High football team on Friday, taking down the Cordova High Lancers of Rancho Cordova, 27-20 in its final home game of the season at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium.

DHS (3-6 overall) had a strong first half, wavered in the third quarter, but were able to come back to secure the win over CHS (3-6 overall) in the fourth quarter.

One player’s performance that stood out on both sides of the ball was senior Brody Beckwith. Beckwith was responsible for two great kickoff and punt returns before the Blue Devils’ first two drives of the first frame. He also scored two touchdowns for DHS and intercepted a potential game-tying pass at the end of the game.

“Brody is big tough playing both offense and defense,” Davis High head coach Roscoe Ahn told The Enterprise.

The kickoff to begin the game was returned by Beckwith to the DHS 38-yard line.

On second-and-goal at the 6-yard line, Beckwith caught a touchdown pass but a flag was thrown against DHS for an illegal motion. This meant no points for the Blue Devils and a five-yard penalty.

On fourth-and-goal at the 11-yard line, senior kicker Mohammad Reggad’s field goal attempt was no good.

Beckwith returned Cordova’s next punt to the CHS 37-yard line, setting up his team for success.

On third-and-9, it was Beckwith himself who added the first score to DHS’ tally with a 24-yard touchdown pass at the 1:49 mark. Reggad’s extra point attempt was no good.

Going into the second quarter, the Blue Devils led the Lancers 6-0.

CHS was the first to strike in the second frame. After recovering a fumble on their punt to DHS, the Lancers took advantage.

On second-and-4, junior quarterback Trey Wallace ran the ball into the endzone at 9:49.

Kicker Esaul Covarrubias made the extra point kick, giving the Lancers a 7-6 advantage.

CHS’ lead did not last long, however. On the next drive, sophomore Henry Eich caught a 26-yard touchdown pass. Reggad kicked the ball through the uprights for the extra point and the Blue Devils had the lead back, 13-7.

With 1:19 left in the first half, Blue Devils senior quarterback David Dirksen connected with Beckwith again for a 32-yard touchdown.

During an extra point attempt, an offsides penalty was called on the Lancers. The Blue Devils then tried for a two-point conversion, but were unsuccessful.

At halftime, DHS led CHS 19-7.

The third quarter proved to be notable for the Lancers. Dirksen and his offense hit a rough patch in the game, allowing two interceptions during Blue Devil drives.

Cordova added more points to its tally early in the frame, with junior Zachary McIntire scoring a touchdown with 9:07 left on the clock. An extra point kick made by Covarrubias cut DHS’ lead to 19-14.

On the next drive, at second-and-5 at their own 31-yard line, a Dirksen pass was intercepted by CHS senior Carnell Jones.

The Blue Devils’ next drive was also cut short by an interception. On third-and-4 at the DHS 35-yard line, McIntire picked the ball.

The Lancers took advantage of this, scoring another touchdown with only 18-seconds left in the quarter. This gave CHS the lead, 20-19. Their two-point conversion attempt was no good.

Going into the final quarter of the game, the Lancers led the Blue Devils by a slim margin, 20-19.

It was a thrilling fourth quarter for DHS, who held off the Lancers’ offense and were able to tack on enough points to secure their third win of the season.

The Blue Devils started the fourth frame with the ball and it looked as if they were going to have another rough go, as on a first-and-10 at the Cordova 35-yard line, a Dirksen pass was again intercepted by McIntire.

DHS was able to recover on its next offensive drive, however. At the five-yard line on second-and-goal, junior Jake Saban caught a touchdown pass from Dirksen at the 2:07 mark.

A two-point conversion attempt by the Blue Devils was also successful, with senior Carsen Arosteguy bringing the ball into the endzone. This brought the score to the final.

The threat of a possible tied game looked very possible as the clock wound down. It was first-and-15 at the DHS 28-yard line for the Lancers when Beckwith capped off his valuable performance by intercepting a Wallace pass in the endzone.

“The win was kind of messy but we’ll take it,” remarked Ahn. “It came together in the end. It was obviously great to get an exciting win for the seniors’ last game at home.”

Next Friday, the Blue Devils will close out their season on the road at Del Oro High (6-3 overall; 3-3 Sierra Foothill League) in Loomis at 7 p.m. This week, the Golden Eagles defeated Rocklin High 15-14.

Before Friday’s game, the seniors on this year’s Blue Devils squad were recognized. They include: Dirksen, Beckwith, Arosteguy, Reggad, Noah Wittenberg, Cooper Ballard, B... Click here to read full article
