Two touchdowns were not enough for the Davis High football team to take down Laguna Creek High of Elk Grove on Friday at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium. In their second to last home game of the season, the Blue Devils were defeated by the Cardinals 49-14.

DHS (2-6 overall) was coming off of a bye week last Friday. On Oct. 3, DHS lost to Arroyo High 48-6. On Sept. 26, DHS defeated River Valley High 47-22.

LCHS (3-5 overall; 2-2 Delta League) was coming off of a loss last Friday against Elk Grove High, 28-7.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on their first drive of the game.

On a third-and-1, LCHS quarterback Jayden Debbs connected with Kelan Smith for a 36-yard touchdown at the 10:42 mark.

An extra point kick from Xavier Reyes was good, giving the Cardinals an early 7-0 advantage.

On the Blue Devils’ first drive of the game, the offense was able to get all the way to the 3-yard line after starting on their own 39-yard line. On a fourth-and-2 at the 3-yard line, an incomplete pass from quarterback David Dirksen led to a turnover on downs.

It didn’t take long for Laguna Creek to capitalize again offensively.

On the next drive, on second-and-7 at their own 7-yard line, Ryan Eddy completed a 93-yard rushing touchdown at the 5:25 mark.

Another good kick through the uprights for Reyes gave LCHS a 14-0 lead.

The Cardinals added one more touchdown to their tally in the first frame with 2:35 left on the clock. Eddy took the ball into the endzone again for two yards and Reyes made another extra point kick.

Going into the second quarter, LCHS led DHS 21-0.

The Blue Devils were able to get on the board in the second quarter, but not before two more touchdowns from the Cardinals.

At 8:07, junior running back Levi Ramos took the ball into the endzone for eight yards. Another extra point made brought the score to 28-0.

With 2:38 left on the clock Josiyah Horton scored a 50-yard touchdown. A good kick by Reyes brought the tally to 35-0.

On a second-and-10, Dirksen connected with senior Brennan Bolnik for a 43-yard touchdown pass at 1:26.

Senior kicker Mohammad Reggad kicked the ball through the uprights for the extra point.

Going into halftime, DHS was down 35-7.

The Blue Devils’ offense was able to keep the momentum going in the third quarter, scoring another touchdown on its second drive of the frame. Not before LCHS added another score to its tally, however.

With 9:12 on the clock, junior quarterback Camden Ridgeway passed the ball to senior wide receiver Kelan Smith for a 64-yard touchdown. Reyes continued his perfect night, elevating the Cardinals’ lead to 42-7.

On the next drive, DHS began with the ball at its own 27-yard line. Dirksen passed the ball to junior Jake Saban, moving the ball to the 47-yard line in Laguna Creek territory.

On a first-and-10 at the 47-yard line, Dirksen carried the ball to the 30-yard line for a gain of 17 yards, earning another Blue Devil first down all on his own.

At the 30-yard line on first-and-10, Dirksen was sacked for a loss of six yards.

On second-and-16 at the 36-yard line, sophomore Zion Millican rushed the ball three yards to the 33-yard line.

At the 33-yard line and third-and-13, Dirksen again carried the ball himself to the 27-yard line. A flag was called on the Cardinals for holding and a 10-yard penalty brought the Blue Devils the first down they were in search of.

On first-and-10, Millican scored a 17-yard rushing touchdown with 2:11 left on the clock.

Another good kick made by Reggad cut LCHS’ lead to 42-14.

Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, this would be the last big offensive move they made in the game. The Cardinals added one more score to its tally in the final quarter of the matchup.

With junior Liam Osborne in at quarterback for DHS, the Blue Devils were able to move the ball from their own 12-yard line to the LCHS 39-yard line.

On a second-and-1 at the Cardinals’ 39-yard line, LCHS junior Alex Plummer completed a pick-6 with 56 seconds left in the game. An extra point made by Reyes brought the score to the final.
