The Davis High School varsity flag football team faced off against Folsom High School on the Bulldogs’ home turf on Tuesday Oct. 7.
Davis came into the game with a 2-9 record, but with strong plays and sheer determination, they were able to secure a 25-14 win.
From the beginning of the game, it was close, with neither team scoring in the first quarter. Davis tried to pull ahead with offensive passes and defensive stops, but despite their efforts, they weren't able to get onto the scoreboard in the first half.
The Blue Devils’ offense has been struggling, with no points in their past two games. However, their hard work in practices paid off, as this game they were able to overcome their scoring drought.
Folsom scored first, scoring twice in the second quarter. Davis kept the Bulldogs from scoring any more points after the resulting 14 points from the touchdowns, but they were unable to make it to the endzone in the first half.
The Blue Devils stayed determined and played hard, leading them to find their way onto the scoreboard. Their plays got stronger, and they were able to build themselves up after the first half.
Although the second half began with Davis behind 14-0, they were able to recover and score 19 points in the third quarter, and six more in the fourth.
The scoring was kicked off by junior Lily Schneider, squeezing into the endzone after a big run by senior running back Jordan Keeper.
Senior Sonia Clayton performed exceptionally, scoring three touchdowns throughout the game.
Once Davis secured the momentum, they never looked back, pulling flags strongly to maintain their lead against the Bulldogs.
Senior Ariana Lopez added on a defensive interception, hyping up the Davis squad. This game marked Lopez’s second game on the season rotating in as quarterback as well.
These crucial plays helped to secure a lead that remained through the end of the fourth quarter, ultimately leading to the Blue Devils’ win. Davis hopes to conserve this energy and channel it into another win in their next game against Rocklin High School on Oct. 9.
