SACRAMENTO — The final score in Friday night’s matchup between the Davis High and Hiram Johnson High football teams was a palindrome, with the Blue Devils coming out on top, 41-14.

DHS improved to 1-2 on the season while HJHS of Sacramento remains winless at 0-3 overall. Last season, the Blue Devils got their only win of the year against HJHS on Sept. 6, 2024 in a home game when the contest was called early due to the stadium losing power.

During the first drive of the game, DHS offense displayed vigor. Alexander Guzman began his big night for the Blue Devils by running the opening kick to the Warriors’ 29-yard line.

With the ball on the six-yard line and on a fourth down, quarterback David Dirksen passed the ball to Henry Eich for the first touchdown of the contest for a 6-0 lead.

Mohammad Reggad’s first extra point kick attempt of the game was blocked.

On the Warriors’ first drive of the game, the snap was overthrown. DHS was able to get possession of the ball back on the three-yard line in HJHS territory.

Noah Wittenberg scored a rushing touchdown at the six-minute mark, bringing the Blue Devils’ lead to 12-0. Reggad’s extra point attempt was good this time for a 13-0 advantage.

While making its way down the field on the next drive, a HJHS pass was intercepted by Guzman. He was injured during the play, however, and did not return for the rest of the game.

His effort was fruitful though, with Dirksen throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jake Saban on a fourth down for a 19-0 lead. Another extra point from Reggad gave the Blue Devils a 20-0 tally going into the second quarter.

DHS kept up the momentum in the second frame.

In the opening drive of the second quarter, the Blue Devils began with the ball on their own 39-yard line. Cooper Ballard moved the ball 18 yards up the field to HJHS territory at the 43-yard line.

Dirksen then threw a 31-yard pass to Brannon Hicklin, bringing DHS to the 12-yard line.

Wittenberg notched his second touchdown of the night and Reggard’s kick was on point again for a 27-0 Blue Devils lead.

At the 4:12 mark, Ryan Buzbee completed a pick-6. This, plus another extra point gave DHS a healthy 34-0 advantage going into halftime.

A third Blue Devils interception came during the first drive of the second half thanks to Carter Post.

Again, the Blue Devils offense capitalized on the opportunity, with Dirksen finding Carsen Arosteguy in the endzone at the 5:05 mark. Reggad’s fifth extra point of the night brought the score to 41-0.

The Warriors’ offense finally showed up to the party at the end of the third quarter, scoring a touchdown as the clock expired.

Going into the final frame of the contest, DHS led HJHS 41-7.

In the fourth quarter, HJHS added another touchdown to its tally, bringing the score to the final.

DHS head coach Roscoe Ahn was proud of his team and happy to see them come out on top.

“We had a lot of players making a lot of good plays and executing well,” remarked Ahn. “It was a great game.”

Next week, DHS will play in a home game against Franklin High (2-1 overall) of Elk Grove at 7:15 p.m. This will mark the Blue Devils’ first home game of the season after spending the first three games on the road. The Wildcats lost to Chavez High of Stockton 39-26 on Friday.

“It should be nice to finally get to play at home,” stated Ahn.... Click here to read full article
