Davis High’s men’s varsity basketball put up a strong fight against Laguna Creek High School on Dec. 3.

The first quarter began slowly, the scoreboard was empty for nearly five minutes. After Laguna Creek scored the first point, the teams began trading baskets.

Senior Kaleb Gee and captain junior Elijah Shweky each had two three-pointers. Gee was the star shooter of the game, scoring 14 points in total.

Davis fell behind multiple times in the second half, but managed to claw their way back. “It was a team effort to continue to fight back into the game,” head coach Stephen Smith said.

Sophomore Rhys Crawford put up the final two points as the buzzer sounded, ending the game. Davis lost 53-47.

“We’re an inexperienced team, but we’re growing as we play,” Smith said. “Our mistakes come in our turnovers and mental mistakes.”

The team is looking ahead to get their first win of the season. “(We’re) very desperate and hungry to win,” Shweky said.

Smith said that as the season progresses, the team is learning to be patient with themselves. “They’re hard on themselves, they want to win right away but it doesn’t always work that way,” Smith said. “Sometimes the journey is the rewarding part (...) this is just another step in that journey.”
