The Davis High varsity women’s water polo team triumphed over the Granite Bay Grizzlies, 7-4, on Wednesday, Oct 9.
The first quarter began slowly, with both teams playing tight defense. Granite Bay secured the first goal of the game, ending the first quarter 1-0.
Granite Bay maintained its lead throughout the second quarter and scored again with 20 seconds left, entering halftime up 2-0.
The third quarter was a turning point for Davis offensively.
“We run a motion-heavy offense where you’re constantly moving. It’s very exhausting to do but it’s also very exhausting to defend,” Coach Jamey Wright said. “That stretch in the third quarter where [...] their team just got a little more tired then we were and that was where we created a separation.”
Assists from sophomore Aiva Mann led to sophomore Addie Sinclair scoring two consecutive goals. Sophomore Jessie Walker scored another in the last nine seconds, ending the third quarter 3-2.
“[Granite Bay was] running different plays than they ran last time,” Sinclair said. “But we adapted well to their plays and figured out who to guard on defense.”
The Grizzlies scored twice in the final quarter but were unable to keep up with the Devils. Sinclair scored two more goals and freshman Hilde McConnell and Mann each scored once.
Wright said that defensive plays from sophomore goalie Hazel Beatty were a key factor in Davis’ win. “Our goalie was exceptional, they’ve got a tremendous offensive team and to limit them to four goals is really really something,” Wright said.
